It's difficult to choose a favourite from within the Lakes but the Keswick area is packed with little gems. From the ancient monument that is Castlerigg Stone Circle, the remoteness of Tewet Tarn nearby, the ever popular Ashness Bridge & Surprise View, along with all the bays, jetties and shores of Derwent Water. The bustling market town of Keswick is an ideal base to visit the North Lakes with Buttermere, Crummock Water, Ullswater, Thirlmere and Borrowdale all within easy reach from there. An ideal base for the Southern Lakes would be the bustling town of Ambleside with Rydal Water, Grasmere, Windermere and Coniston Water all close by.

TRAVEL TIPS

TRAVEL TIPS

Although there is public transport within the Lakes, this is limited and having your own transport is therefore advisable. The Lake District is one of the safest places to live, work and visit having relatively low levels of crime compared to other areas in England and Wales. However, normal common sense should be applied regarding your camera gear, don't leave it unattended or in plain view in your vehicle when parked. You can photograph throughout the National Park with confidence both day and night. Care needs to be taken when on the fells as the terrain can be slippery and treacherous; stick to the pathways at all times. You should always let somebody know of your planned route and avoid being alone where possible. The mobile network within the Lakes is patchy at best and in most of the valleys nonexistent due to the terrain. Although most of the built up areas have coverage. The weather is unpredictable in the Lakes so check the local forecasts before venturing out, always take adequate warm and waterproof clothing with you.
